March 26, 2009 Williamsburg to Ocracoke, NC

Well, we sure didn't think we would be in Ocracoke this evening. We started the drive from Williamsburg over our usual roads, across the Hampton Roads on the tunnel bridge and around I-664 to 64 to the new toll road south on 168 to North Carolina. Nice to have four lanes all the way to the bridge over Currituck Sound to the Outer Banks. We turned north to NC12 towards Currituck County. Not much new, but it seems as tho every open space has been built upon. I was anxious to see what Ocean Sands looked like and whether our old house was still there. And what about the open space behind it, which so added to the ambiance of the place. Well hurrah, the house was still there, the open space was still there and I came away feeling OK.

For those of you familiar with the area, there is now a grocery store called Harris Teeter built at the traffic light at section E where there is an entrance to the Currituck Club. We didn't travel as far north as Timbuck II, so no news on those changes.

We turned south and drove to the free ferry at Hatteras and decided to take it across and try for a camping spot somewhere on Ocracoke Island. Well, we drove to Ocracoke and found a quaint campground with full hook-ups that we shared with ducks, dogs and horses. It worked ok, since we were now within a stones throw of the Cedar Island Ferry.

The weather has not been cooperating on this trip. My fear has been high winds which we did not experience in Ocracoke. But it has been overcast and cool, altho the farther south we go, the warmer it is.

  1. There's a Harris Teeter on the Outer Banks??? Good lord, guess they are really catering to those folks in the McMansions north of Sanderling and on the golf course....

  2. Look at how the trees have grown around the house!! I still think we should have at least taken the sign, especially since they ended up renaming it anyway...
