April 16, 2009 The Everglades

We are not far from the Everglades but it is scary how agricultural nursery's have come so close to the door of the Everglades. We saw nurserys that had palms, plants (flowering of all sorts) veggies(especially tomatoes). These nurserys must supply all the Home Depots and Lowes and Wal-Marts in Florida and well into the other southeastern states. The farms compete for water which is affecting the ecology of the Everglades. As you go into the Everglade National Park, the farms go right up to the entrance into the park.

Our first stop in the Park is to travel the Anhinga loop trail, which was quite amazing. Lots of anhingas and other birds and alligators, living side by side. We traveled along the road until we came to a place to eat lunch, which also had hundreds of wood storks nesting in trees. We spent a long time watching them and trying to photograph them. We also saw roseate spoonbills, herons and other water birds.

It was a good day. We were prepared for bugs, but a breeze was blowing and we were pretty successful in avoiding bites.
