April 4, 2009 Alligators and a Lighthouse

After a very cool night, we woke to another beautiful day. We are off to St. Augustine to see the lighthouse. This is one I climb, only 219 steps and a very nice view. I viewed the scene from the top with my back up against the wall of the lighthouse.

Two hundred and nineteen steps down and then we went to the Alligator Farm across the street. I was skeptical, but it was quite the wonderful spot. Interesting gators, crocs, snakes(which I skipped) and a wonderful bird rookery. It is breeding season and we saw lots of nests of storks, egrets, snowy egrets, cattle egrets, blue herons living side by side with gators. I would advise a visit to this spot by anyone coming to St. Augustine.

After leaving the Alligator Farm, we drove to Fort Matanzas which is maintained by the National Park Service. No fee. They take you by boat to the Fort, constructed in 1740 to protect the waterway to St. Augustine. Great reenactors who could switch from personality to personality depending on your question. They were reenacting as Spanish soldiers. They fired one of the guns as we were approaching the Fort. There were two guns that looked quite old and two not so old. The newer guns were reproductions made in South Bend, IN.

Why no picture of you at the top of the lighthouse???

Fascinated that the birds live with the reptiles happily...
