We decided to visit the county park at the north end of New Smyrna Beach. There was a mile and a half walkway, with boardwalks to the beach. We could see the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse which we visited two weeks ago.
After spending the morning here (and it started out cold) we drove to the Canaveral National Seashore, just south of New Smyrna Beach. This is the northern part of the park that we visited with Megan two weeks ago. We had a nice lunch where canoes were launched. You can camp on one of the islands in the sound (Mosquito sound!) One group of guys had four canoes loaded. Another couple came along with their dog and they were camping for one night. An interesting idea, but you would want to be there before the bugs arrived.
Like the outer banks and I am sure other barrier islands along the Atlantic coast, there was a small town built along the sound, which existed for a number of years before being deserted. The NPS has restored the main house as a museum. It is interesting how towns spring up and then are deserted and become overgrown.
The weather was perfect for roaming the beaches today. Not real warm, about high in the 70's with a nice cool breeze blowing.
